Veteran defenseman Adrian Aucoin retires after 17 seasons in NHL; played at Columbus last year

Veteran defenseman Adrian Aucoin is retiring after 17 seasons in the NHL.

The 40-year-old Aucoin, who played last season for the Columbus Blue Jackets, recorded 121 goals and 278 assists in 1,108 NHL games.

He also played for Vancouver, Tampa Bay, the New York Islanders, Chicago, Calgary and Phoenix.

Aucoin scored his first career NHL goal on his first shot in his first regular-season game on May 3, 1995.

Known for his fierce slapshot, Aucoin competed in 62 playoff games, recording 21 points. He played for Boston University and was drafted by the Canucks at 117th overall in 1992.

The Canadian won gold at the 1993 world junior championship and silver at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.
