Vesnina, Peng roll into Pattaya quarterfinals

Pattaya City, Thailand (SportsNetwork.com) - Elena Vesnina and Peng Shuai were among the second-round winners Thursday at the Pattaya Open.

The fifth-seeded Vesnina rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thai wild card Nicha Lertpitaksinchai, while the eighth-seeded Peng cruised past Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru, 6-3, 6-4.

Also, ageless 43-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Slovenia's Tadeja Majeric. Date-Krumm will next play fourth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in Friday's quarterfinals.

The tournament lost its top two seeds on Wednesday when Sabine Lisicki and Svetlana Kuznetsova each withdrew because of injuries.

Peng, instead of a potential quarterfinal against the top-seeded Lisicki, will now face Andrea Hlavackova. The Czech advanced in a walkover when Lisicki pulled out because of a shoulder injury.

Next up for Vesnina will be Germany's Julia Goerges, who also moved on without playing in the second round when Kuznetsova decided to bow out because of a muscle strain.

The other quarterfinal Friday will pit third-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania against Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Both were second-round winners on Wednesday.

This week's champion will collect $43,000.
