The Philadelphia Union named John Hackworth its manager Thursday night, removing the interim label from his title.
Hackworth, 42, became interim manager in June after Peter Nowak was fired. The Union were just 2-7-2 under Nowak, but have gone 5-6-2 in their first 13 games under Hackworth.
"I'm very excited to have been given this opportunity," Hackworth said. "I've worked for this organization since 2009 and it's been a real privilege to see it grow into the wonderful club it is today.
"We have a very talented and committed group of players in our locker room and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to continue working with them long term as they and the organization continue to develop."
Hackworth started his coaching career as an assistant at Wake Forest, then was coach at South Florida before joining the United States Under-17 team in 2002. He was an assistant for the U-17 from 2002-04 and coach from 2004-07.
He later became assistant coach for the United States senior team, serving in that role from 2007-09. He joined the Union as an assistant in late 2009.
Hackworth will guide the Union for the first time without the interim tag on Saturday at the New England Revolution.
