North Carolina will open NCAA tournament play without Hall of Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell on the bench.
Longtime Tar Heels assistant coach Andrew Calder said Saturday that Hatchell is still recovering from her final round of chemotherapy and won't help coach the fourth-seeded UNC against No. 13 UT Martin on Sunday.
Hatchell, 62, was diagnosed with leukemia in October and hasn't coached this season. She'd hoped to get back in time to work as a supporting bench coach for the NCAA tournament.
Calder says "she's a little bit down right now and working her way back up."
Calder wouldn't rule out Hatchell returning at a later date if UNC advances in the tournament. If the Tar Heels win they'll face the No. 5 Michigan State-No. 12 Hampton winner.
