UConn: running back Lyle McCombs 'no longer with team,' will get degree over summer

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

University of Connecticut officials say running back Lyle McCombs is no longer on the football team and they're not saying why, but he has had a string of off-the-field problems.

UConn announced Wednesday that the 22-year-old, 5-foot-8, red-shirt senior from Staten Island, New York, is off the team, but will finish school this summer and get his degree.

Coach Bob Diaco says being on the team is a privilege, and with that privilege come responsibilities and expectations. He didn't elaborate.

McCombs is the fourth-leading rusher in UConn history with 2,681 yards. He led the team in rushing the past three seasons.

McCombs' problems have included an on-campus fight in January, a 2012 breach of peace arrest and a 10-week suspension in 2011 after marijuana was found in his dorm room.
