Torre to Retire as Dodgers Manager

NEW YORK (AP) -- A team official speaking on condition of anonymity tells The Associated Press that Joe Torre intends to retire as Los Angeles Dodgers manager at the end of the season and will be replaced by hitting coach Don Mattingly.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made. The person said Friday the Dodgers were close to announcing the decision, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Torre became manager of the Dodgers for the 2008 season following 12 years and four World Series titles with the New York Yankees, but he was not able to match that success in Los Angeles.

Mattingly followed Torre to California as his heir apparent.

Torre turned 70 in July and has won 2,318 games in 29 major league seasons as a manager. His career also has included stints with the Mets, Atlanta and St. Louis.
