Top seed Vinci ousted in Mexico

Top seed and No. 23 in the world Roberta Vinci was ousted in Friday's semifinals at the $220,000 Mexican Open.

Vinci was bested by fellow Italian, third-seeded Sara Errani, 6-4, 6-1, in just one hour and 16 minutes on the red clay at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

Vinci started strong, getting out to a 4-2 lead in the opening set, but Errani roared back on the strength of an effective second serve, winning 11-of-15 second-serve points and 4-of-8 break points chances.

Errani dominated in the second set by winning 10-of-12 first-serve points and breaking Vicni twice.

This will be Errani's sixth career appearance in a final, and her first at this event.

In Friday's other semifinal match, second-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta thumped fourth-seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, 6-2, 6-2 in just one hour and 28 minutes.

The Mexican Open stalwart Pennetta won this event in 2005 and 2008 and was runner-up in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. She's appeared in seven of the last nine finals at the tournament.

Pennetta won 58 percent (22-of-38) of first serve points and played an excellent return game, winning 57 percent of return points, while also capitalizing on 6-of-9 break point opportunities. Begu was done in by three double-faults.

This year's Acapulco champion will collect $37,000.
