Top-ranked Inbee Park criticizes qualifying criteria for Olympic golf tournament

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Inbee Park, the top-ranked player in women's golf, has criticized the qualifying criteria for next year's Olympic tournament, saying it will rule out too many of the world's top stars.

Sixty players will compete in the men's and women's events in Rio de Janiero, and a country is allowed a maximum of four players. South Korea, where Park is from, has 15 players in the top 28 in the women's rankings.

Park says "if you are in the world's top 50, you should be able to play in the Olympics ... There's some countries where (players) ranked No. 300, 400 will play, but obviously not Koreans."

Speaking Wednesday at the British Open, Park says it is "disappointing" that all the best players won't be at the Olympics.
