Tigers' Young out of AL series with muscle strain

(Reuters) - Detroit Tigers slugger Delmon Young will miss the American League Championship Series against the Texas Rangers because of a strained stomach muscle, the team said just hours before the first game was due to start on Saturday.

Young, Detroit's left fielder, injured his left oblique muscle in Thursday's division series-clinching win over the New York Yankees.

He worked out on Friday but the muscle tightened up.

"We thought he was going to be all right," Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters. "He hit fine. Then it stiffened up and it was killing him when he raised his arm."

Young hit three home runs against the Yankees, the most ever by a Detroit player in a post-season series.

Ryan Raburn was scheduled to replace him in left field on Saturday with infielder Danny Worth taking his roster spot.
