Tigers pitcher Scherzer to miss start after twisting ankle in AL Central-clinching celebration

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer will miss his scheduled start Wednesday night in Kansas City after twisting his right ankle while celebrating Detroit's AL Central title.

Manager Jim Leyland said that someone stepped on Scherzer's ankle while the Tigers were jumping into a joyous pile behind the pitcher's mound following their 6-3 victory Monday night.

Scherzer was going to pitch five innings in the regular-season finale to test out his sore right shoulder, which caused him to miss his last scheduled start. Leyland said he's not sure what the injury means for Scherzer's availability when Detroit opens the playoffs Saturday at home.

Scherzer has been one of the best pitchers in the American League down the stretch. He's 16-7 with a 3.82 ERA and 228 strikeouts this season.
