The long, bumpy road to playoffs in Washington: 'Baseball just didn't want to come to DC'

It only seems fitting and proper that the national pastime should be showcased in the nation's capital.

That's what will happen Wednesday when the Washington Nationals host the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the NL division series in a packed ballpark that offers upper deck views of the Capitol and the Washington Monument.

But the struggle to get baseball back in Washington took decades after the Senators left for Texas in 1971. It took a perfect storm of events to get the sport's powers-that-be to change their minds and agree to move the Montreal Expos to D.C. in late 2004.

Longtime city Councilman Jack Evans remembers it as "a struggle. ... Baseball just didn't want to come to D.C."
