TFC edges DCU to snap winless run

Toronto FC claimed its first league win since March 9 by defeating D.C. United, 2-1, at RFK Stadium on Saturday.

D.C. went in front thanks to Dwayne De Rosario's penalty kick, but a strike from Robbie Earnshaw and an own goal from Daniel Woolard saw Toronto overturn the deficit before halftime to snap an 11-game winless run.

Toronto (2-7-5) improves to 11 points on the season to pull five points clear of last-place United (1-11-3).

D.C. took the lead in the 19th minute behind a generous penalty decision. Nick DeLeon made a penetrating run into the box and went down under minimal contact from Gale Agbossoumonde, but referee Hilario Grajeda pointed to the spot. De Rosario converted the ensuing attempt for his second league goal of the season.

United held the lead until the 30th minute when a free kick delivery from mid-field was met by Earnshaw. The Welsh striker outmuscled Brandon McDonald to win the header and send his shot off the post and into the back of the net.

Toronto managed to climb in front four minutes before the break when a free kick played into the box was turned into the United net by Woolard's glancing header.

D.C. United pushed for an equalizer in the second half but failed to find one, bringing its winless run in league play to a miserable 13 games.
