Texas Southern defeats Southern University 54-7

Arvell Nelson threw three touchdown passes Saturday night and Texas Southern defeated Southern University 54-7.

Nelson went 8 for 18 for 244 yards, including a 95-yard touchdown pass play to Kirk Fitzhugh that broke a 7-7 tie with 7:48 to play in the first quarter.

The Tigers (6-3, 6-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) piled up 499 total yards, splitting the total between passing (250) and running (249). Marcus Wright rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Martin Gilbert added 100 yards rushing.

It was the fifth straight win for the Tigers after a 1-3 start. Texas Southern can claim its best season since 2000 with a win in one of its last two games.

Southern U. (2-7, 1-6), which has lost four in a row, was held to 134 yards total offense. Joseph Dray completed 10 of 33 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.
