The Houston Texans and linebacker Brian Cushing have reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension.

The Chronicle was first to report the news on Tuesday.

Cushing's 2012 campaign was cut short after just five games after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Texans' 23-17 victory over the New York Jets on Oct. 8.

The 26-year-old helped his club go 5-0 thanks to 29 tackles and one interception.

Heading into his fifth season out of Southern California, Cushing has totaled 353 tackles, 9 1/2 sacks and seven interceptions over 49 appearances.
