Osaka, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - Defending champion Samantha Stosur notched a second-round victory Thursday at the Japan Women's Open tennis event.
The top seed was leading fellow Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 when Gajdosova retired on Day 4 on the hardcourts at Utsubo Tennis Center.
The Osaka stalwart Stosur beat Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in last year's final, was the inaugural Osaka titlist in 2009, and was the runner-up here in 2011.
Stosur's quarterfinal opponent will be Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva.
A Thursday upset came when little-known Croat Ana Konjuh ousted fourth-seeded American Coco Vandeweghe 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Also on Day 4, fifth-seeded Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan whipped Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena 6-0, 6-1 and eighth-seeded American Lauren Davis leveled Japanese qualifier Shuko Aoyama 6-1, 6-1.
Friday's other quarterfinals will pit second-seeded American Madison Keys against Thai Luksika Kumkhum, third-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina versus Davis, and Diyas against Konjuh.
The 2014 Osaka champ will collect $43,000.
