Stoops in no rush to end OU's quarterback competition between Bell, Knight

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops still isn't quite ready to name a replacement for four-year starting quarterback Landry Jones.

The Sooners, who won 10 games for the third straight season a year ago, opened fall practice Thursday. They did so without the record-setting Landry under center for the first time since 2008.

Junior Blake Bell and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight are competing for the starting position, a three-way race that was reduced to just Bell and Knight after sophomore Kendal Thompson underwent surgery for a broken foot on Thursday.

Stoops says he's in no hurry to name a starter, preferring to wait until one quarterback separates himself from the other.

Oklahoma opens its season by hosting Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31.
