Stone, Crow advance in women's single sculls

American Genevra Stone and Australia's Kim Crow were among 12 rowers who advanced to the semifinals of the women's single sculls event on Tuesday.

Stone was the second rower to cross the finish line in the event's second heat, while Crow won her race with a time of 7 minutes, 34.29 seconds. The Aussie had the fastest time of any racer on the day.

The semifinals of the single sculls will take place on Thursday, one day before Crow will row in the women's double sculls. However, the dual role isn't taking its toll on her yet.

"I've trained to do it. In four years I haven't missed a solitary training session, so I'm in good shape," said Crow. "In some ways I'm three races down, which means I'm halfway there. I'm happy to be in this place at this time."

Americans Kristin Hedstrom and Julie Nichols won their respective repechage in lightweight women's double sculls, finishing just under two seconds ahead of Canada's Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee. Both boats moved on to the semifinals.

Also, Americans Margot Shumway and Sarah Trowbridge were one of two boats to move on to the final of the women's double sculls.

However, the American rower Kenneth Jurkowski did not advance to the main semis in men's single sculls, though Great Britain's Alan Campbell did as he won his quarterfinal race.

Semifinals were also held in men's lightweight fours, with the U.S. failing to move into the medal finals, while the hosting British did see their men's double sculls team advance to the final.

Repechages were also held on Tuesday in men's lightweight double sculls and fours as well as the women's eight.
