Steelers secondary providing physical presence

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Steelers are giving up plenty of yards but not plenty of points.

The Steelers are 27th in passing yards allowed but fifth in points allowed. Opponents are only scoring touchdowns on about half the drives inside Pittsburgh's 20, a marked improvement from last season.

New defensive coordinator Keith Butler says the physical play of the secondary has helped the Steelers (6-4) become stingier when opponents drive deep into Pittsburgh territory.

Safety Will Allen said a consistent focus by coach Mike Tomlin on short field situations has helped build up the confidence of a defensive backfield playing without retired stars Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor.

Pittsburgh is off this week and plays at Seattle on Nov. 29.
