Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Stars acquired center Jason Spezza in a trade with the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Forward Ludwig Karlsson is also heading to the Stars with Spezza, who was selected second overall by the Senators in the 2001 NHL Draft.

Ottawa received young forwards Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill and Nicholas Paul along with a 2015 second-round draft pick in return.

Spezza, 31, had 23 goals and 43 assists in 75 games last season, serving as the Senators' captain following Daniel Alfredsson's departure in the summer of 2013.

A four-time 30-goal scorer, the Toronto-area native is one year away from being an unrestricted free agent.

"Jason is one of the elite playmakers in the game and fits our identity perfectly," said Stars general manager Jim Nill. "Depth at the center position is paramount for winning in this League and his skill set and experience really solidifies our group."

Spezza departs Canada's capital having collected 251 goals with 436 assists in 686 career regular-season games, adding 17 goals and 52 points in 56 postseason games.

The 23-year-old Chiasson posted 13 goals and 22 assists in 79 games for the Stars last season, his first full campaign at the NHL level.
