Stamkos out indefinitely with broken tibia

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tampa Bay Lightning sniper Steven Stamkos suffered a broken right tibia during Monday's 3-0 loss at Boston.

"At this point Steven will be out indefinitely," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. "The medical staff in Boston, in consultation with our team physicians, has made the decision to surgically repair the injury. The procedure is expected to take place tomorrow morning. The biggest concern for me, and the rest of the Lightning, is that decisions are made in Steven's best long-term interest, and we feel this is the appropriate course of action."

Stamkos was backchecking on a play in the Tampa Bay zone in the second period when he got tangled with Boston defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Stamkos fell to the ice and slid feet-first before his lower right leg slammed into the right post.

He was removed on a stretcher with 7:11 remaining.

The 23-year-old forward is tied for the NHL lead in goals (14) and points (23).
