Sharapova moves on in Montreal

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - French Open champion Maria Sharapova was a come-from-behind second-round winner Wednesday at the $2.44 million Rogers Cup tennis event.

The fourth-seeded former world No. 1 fought back to beat rising Spaniard Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Uniprix Stadium.

Sharapova, who has now won 11 of her last 12 matches on tour, was a runner-up at this event in Toronto in 2009. Her third-round opponent will be capable Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Meanwhile, sixth-seeded German left-hander Angelique Kerber whipped France's Caroline Garcia 6-4, 6-1 and 11th-seeded former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki pasted Czech Klara Koukalova 6-1, 6-2. Kerber has reached, and lost, in four finals this season, including last week versus Serena Williams in Stanford. Wozniacki was the Montreal champ back in 2010.

In other second-round action involving seeds, British qualifier Heather Watson ousted No. 10 Aussie Open runner-up and 2008 Montreal finalist Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), a No. 14 Suarez Navarro held off Czech lucky loser Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, and No. 15 Czech Lucie Safarova handled Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4, 6-2.

Also on Day 3, 2013 Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki of Germany grounded American Madison Keys 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Ekaterina Makarova routed fellow Russian Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-2.

The 2014 Rogers Cup champ will collect $467,300.
