CLEVELAND, Ohio (Reuters) - Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal will undergo surgery to repair an injured right thumb, the team reported on their website on Sunday without indicating when the veteran was likely to return to action.
O'Neal was originally hurt in a game against the Boston Celtics Thursday and after further evaluation in Maryland two days later, the center was informed he would require an operation on the injury.
The surgery will take place Monday and one local newspaper speculated that the 37-year-old could miss the remainder of the regular season.
Cleveland (46-14) traded for the four-time NBA champion in the off-season with O'Neal averaging 12 points and 6.7 rebounds to help the team record the best record in the NBA.
