SDSU's Stiegelmeier may get multi-year deal

(STATS) - John Stiegelmeier is entering his 20th season as South Dakota State's head football coach and it appears he's about to receive his first multi-year contract.

Earlier this year, the South Dakota Board of Regents changed a longstanding statewide policy banning multi-year contracts for state employees.

The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls reported Stiegelmeier is having a multi-year contract finalized by the university along with women's basketball coach Aaron Johnston, new men's basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger and athletic director Justin Sell.

Stiegelmeier, who makes $195,000 annually, has a 128-90 career record and has led South Dakota State to four straight appearances in the FCS playoffs.

Sell said SDSU plans to take the contracts to the Board of Regents for approval by June 1.

Under the new policy, the University of South Dakota signed first-year football coach Bob Nielson to a three-year contract at $255,000 annually.
