Schweinsteiger undergoes successful surgery

The 27-year-old was immediately taken to a Munich hospital after being carried off the field in the 50th minute when he was involved in an awkward aerial collision with Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler.

Schweinsteiger emerged from the procedure early Thursday morning unscathed, having a metal plate inserted in his right shoulder.

The Germany international will be unable to train with his club team for at least six weeks and is expected to return to action after the Bundesliga winter break.
