Ryan set to get approval as controlling owner

Baseball owners are set to approve Nolan Ryan as the controlling owner of the Texas Rangers when they meet Thursday.

Chuck Greenberg and Ryan headed the group that bought the team from Tom Hicks last August in a deal valued at $590 million. Greenberg became chief executive officer, then left on March 11 and sold his ownership stake.

Ryan, the team president since February 2008, took over as CEO. Baseball owners must approve any change in controlling owner.

While the turmoil involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and owner Frank McCourt isn't on the formal agenda, it is likely to be discussed, at least informally. Commissioner Bud Selig appointed former Rangers president Tom Schieffer as the team's monitor on April 27. Schieffer must approve any expense of $5,000 or more.
