SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) The Royals agreed to minor league contracts with veterans Clint Barmes, Brian Duensing and Ross Ohlendorf on Thursday, giving each an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during spring training.

Barmes, an infielder, hit .232 with three homers in 98 games for the Padres last season. The 13-year veteran spent eight seasons with the Rockies, and has also played for the Astros and Pirates.

Duensing went 4-1 with a 4.25 ERA in 55 relief appearances for the Twins last year. The left-hander had a 2.14 ERA in July and August, holding opposing batter to a .192 average over that stretch.

Ohlendorf went 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA in 21 relief appearances over two stints with the Rangers last season. The right-hander has also pitched for the Yankees, Pirates, Padres and Nationals.

Royals pitchers and catchers have their first workout Friday. The full squad reports next week.
