RI school board lets teachers keep jobs at troubled high school where everyone was fired

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island school board has approved an agreement to allow teachers who were fired from a troubled high school to keep their jobs after all.

The 5-1 decision Tuesday evening by the Central Falls school district board of trustees ends a turbulent chapter that drew national attention to the impoverished city. The February decision to fire every high school teacher drew praise from President Barack Obama, who cited it as an example of accountability.

The teachers' union and administration last week agreed to a deal that requires teachers to work a longer day and tutor students.

Union president Jane Sessums says the board's approval of the deal provides some closure.

Karen Feldman of the youth advocacy group Young Voices says she hopes the episode has sparked a renewed commitment to students.
