(SportsNetwork.com) - An agent for Oscar Taveras says the St. Louis Cardinals rookie has died in an auto accident in the Dominican Republic, according to multiple reports.

The agent, Brian Mejia, confirmed the news Sunday evening to reporters in the Dominican Republic and multiple U.S. outlets, including MLB.com, CBSSports.com and the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

"Obviously, we have deep condolences to his family," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said, according to MLB.com "We are still waiting for more details before issuing a full statement."

Taveras, 22, batted .239 in 80 games this season with three home runs and 22 RBI.

The highly-touted prospect homered in the Cardinals' 5-4 win over San Francisco in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Oct. 12.

His last appearance came in Game 5 on Oct. 16, when he grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the top of the ninth inning and remained in the game to play right field.
