Report: Shields to San Diego

(SportsNetwork.com) - James Shields has reportedly found a new team.

According to SB Nation, the free agent pitcher and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a four-year contract that includes a club option for a fifth season. The deal, pending a physical, is expected to be worth between $72-76 million.

Shields spent the past two seasons with Kansas City and last year helped the Royals to the American League pennant. He was 14-8 with a 3.21 earned run average in 34 starts last year after going 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA in his first season with Kansas City.

The 33-year-old right-hander began his career with Tampa Bay and also helped the Rays to the 2008 World Series during his seven years with the franchise.

In nine big league seasons, Shields owns a career record of 114-90 with a 3.72 ERA. He has made at least 31 starts in each of his eight full seasons and was an All-Star in 2011 when he led the American League with 11 complete games and four shutouts while his 2.82 ERA that year was third-best in the league.
