Report: Bears QB Brian Hoyer to miss at least 8 weeks after undergoing surgery

Just when the Chicago Bears appeared to have a viable replacement for the injured Jay Cutler, they were dealt another unfortunate blow at quarterback.

On Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers, Brian Hoyer exited with a forearm injury, which was later deemed to be broken. The initial prognosis was obviously serious, but it was unclear how long he'd be out.

According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, it turns out Hoyer may be out for the year. He's undergoing surgery on Sunday, which will force him to miss at least eight weeks. As a result, he's a candidate to be placed on injured reserve.

Hoyer had been playing extremely well in Cutler's place, setting a franchise record with four straight 300-yard games -- something Cutler has never come close to accomplishing in Chicago. Prior to breaking his forearm, Hoyer racked up 1,445 yards and six touchdowns in five starts, while not throwing a single interception. He was completing 67 percent of his passes, but the Bears were just 1-4 in games he started.

Cutler is expected to return from a thumb injury relatively soon, but if he's not ready to go for the Bears' next game, it'll likely be Matt Barkley under center.
