Redskins take Cofield off short-term IR

Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Redskins will have starting nose tackle Barry Cofield back on the field this weekend after activating him from injured reserve/designated to return on Tuesday.

Cofield has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain he sustained in Washington's season opener against Houston on Sept. 7 and was first eligible to return to the active roster this week.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said on Tuesday that Cofield is expected to play in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Cofield has started 81 consecutive games, the longest active streak among defensive tackles. Of that total, 49 of them have come since signing with the Redskins in 2011 following a five-year stint with the NFC East rival New York Giants.

The 30-year-old recorded 32 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks last season.

To make room for Cofield on the 53-man roster, Washington waived rookie outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat.
