Red Wings sign goaltender Jared Coreau to 2-year contract

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Red Wings have signed goaltender Jared Coreau to a two-year contract.

The team announced the move Wednesday, a day after Coreau and Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser were among 24 players to elect salary arbitration.

Coreau gives the Red Wings depth in net, where restricted free agent Petr Mrazek has emerged as a starter and Jimmy Howard has become expendable as a backup with three years left on his $31.8 million, six-year contract. Detroit general manager Ken Holland is working on re-signing Mrazek to a multiyear contract.

The 24-year-old Coreau played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League the past two years. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound goalie was among AHL leaders with 29 wins and a 2.43 goals-against average.
