The Boston Red Sox announced the signing of pitcher Trey Ball, the seventh overall pick in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, on Wednesday.

Ball, an 18-year-old left-hander from New Castle, IN, was regarded as one of the premier prep pitchers of the 2013 class and posted a 6-0 record with a 0.76 earned run average his senior season. He also registered an impressive 93 strikeouts in just 46 innings pitched.

According to WEEI radio, Ball had agreed to a contract with a signing bonus less than MLB's recommended $3.246 million allotment for the No. 7 choice.

Ball, the highest Red Sox draft selection since outfielder Trot Nixon was taken seventh overall by the team in 1993, will make his pro debut for Boston's Rookie League affiliate in Fort Meyers, FL later this summer.
