BOSTON (AP) Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez is back from his injury rehab assignment and in the starting lineup for Friday night's series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 25-year-old missed all of last season after undergoing elbow reconstructive surgery. He had six hits in 13 at-bats in five games for Triple-A Pawtucket before returning to the majors.

He's starting behind the plate and batting eighth.

The Red Sox also recalled infielder Marco Hernandez from Triple-A.

To make room, they optioned catcher Blake Swihart to Pawtucket. He hit .278 (5 for 18) in six games.

Outfielder Rusney Castillo was sent down following Wednesday's game.
