Rangers on brink as players reject wage cuts

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

The financiers trying to save Rangers say they are "accelerating" the sale of the Scottish champions after failing to reach a wage-cut deal with the squad, which includes three Americans.

The 140-year-old Glasgow club must find investors or implement drastic moneysaving measures after being forced to enter bankruptcy protection last month.

The team includes Americans Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Alejando Bedoya.

The administrators running Rangers warn the team might not be able to complete the season as it tries to implement cuts of $1.6 million a month.

Rangers say it can't play in Europe next season because it cannot fulfill its financial obligations to UEFA before the March 31 deadline.
