Joey Barton captained Queens Park Rangers in his debut Monday night, a 0-0 tie in the Premier League against former club Newcastle.

Barton, released by Newcastle after making critical comments about the club on Twitter, was among five new signings in the QPR lineup. The hosts had the better chances throughout at Loftus Road.

In the first half, Jay Bothroyd volleyed over the crossbar from 6 yards and had a header cleared off the goal line by defender Danny Simpson. Steven Taylor managed to scramble Shaun Wright-Phillips' lob away from goal.

Shaun Derry headed wide from an Adel Taarabt corner kick in the second half.

Newcastle (2-0-2) is fourth with eight points, while QPR (1-2-1) has four points.

MALAGA, Spain (AP) — Santi Cazorla and Joaquin Sanchez each scored twice to give Malaga a 4-0 win over Granada on Monday for its first victory in the Spanish league after an $85 million offseason spending spree.

Cazorla and Joaquin, both added during the offseason, scored to give the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead at La Rosaleda stadium. After the break, Cazorla slotted a free kick under a defensive wall, and then fed Joaquin for the final goal.

Cazorla has scored three goals already this season for Malaga (1-1), two from free kicks. Grenada (0-2) has been outscored 5-0.
