The Washington Nationals extended the protective netting behind home plate to provide even more protection to fans, and on Wednesday night the net kept a splintered bat from soaring into the stands in the seventh inning. Philadelphia's Cesar Hernandez broke his bat at the handle while fouling off a Gio Gonzalez pitch, and the barrel got stuck high in the netting.
