Portugal legend Eusebio passes away at 71

Lisbon, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - Legendary Portugal striker Eusebio died at the age of 71 on Sunday due to cardiac arrest.

Considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game, Eusebio finished as the top scorer at the 1966 World Cup, netting nine goals as Portugal finished in third place.

Born in Mozambique, which was a Portuguese colony at the time, Eusebio moved to Europe and became a star with Benfica, leading the team to the 1962 European Cup while being named the European Football of the Year in 1965.

Benfica reached the European Cup final three more times in the 1960's, but the team came up short each time.

Despite failing to lead Benfica to more glory, Eusebio carved out a reputation as one of the most feared attackers in the world by scoring 733 goals in 745 professional matches.

Eusebio had been admitted to the hospital a number of times over the past 12 months because of heart and respiratory issues, and it was confirmed on Sunday that he died of cardiac arrest.
