Police: Green's cousin intoxicated before crash

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Police say the cousin of New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green had a blood alcohol level three times Michigan's legal limit at the time of a crash that killed him and the basketball player's sister.

Troy Police Lt. Bob Redmond says 27-year-old Ben Green's blood alcohol level was 0.24. Michigan's legal limit is 0.08.

Redmond said Green's driver's license had been suspended since 2004 when he was arrested in Detroit for operating a vehicle while impaired.

Green was driving before the Monday morning crash along Interstate 75 in Troy, about 15 miles north of Detroit.

Ben Green and 30-year-old Tamara Green died at the scene.

The pair attended Sunday night's game between the Hornets and Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Willie Green starred at Detroit Mercy.
