Pizarro returns to Bayern on free transfer

Bayern Munich has confirmed that former striker Claudio Pizarro has returned to the club on a free transfer from Werder Bremen.

Pizarro spent six years with Bayern from 2001-2007, scoring 71 goals before moving on to Chelsea and then Bremen.

But with the 33-year-old's contract having expired at Bremen, he has decided to return to the Allianz Arena in the hopes of adding to his record goal total in the Bundesliga for a foreign player, having netted 160 goals in 333 league games.

"We are pleased to have been able to sign Claudio Pizarro, an internationally experienced and very dangerous striker," Bayern's director of sport, Christian Nerlinger, told the club's official website.

Pizarro will likely take over for Ivica Olic as the reserve striker for leading scorer Mario Gomez, and he becomes the fourth new signing at Bayern this summer, joining Xherdan Shaqiri, Tom Starke and Dante.
