Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed pitcher John Axford off waivers from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday.

Axford had signed a one-year deal with Cleveland last December to serve in the closer's role, but had been relieved of those duties in early May and has been pitching as a middle reliever since.

On the season, he is 2-3 with a 3.92 earned run average in 49 games.

Over six seasons, Axford has a 24-22 mark with a 3.38 ERA in 330 games, all out of the bullpen. He has recorded 116 saves and 380 strikeouts in 317 1/3 innings.
