Pirates' McCutchen placed on DL

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed the reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list on Monday, retroactive to Aug. 4, due to a fractured left rib.

The Pirates had been trying to avoid placing McCutchen on the DL, attempting to give him time to heal, but things didn't improve enough for him to return.

McCutchen got hit by a Randall Delgado fastball in a game at Arizona on Aug. 2 in retaliation for an unintentional plunking of Diamondbacks star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt the night prior. Goldschmidt landed on the disabled list after taking an Ernesto Frieri pitch off his left hand.

The injury, an avulsion fracture involving the costochondral cartilage of his 11th rib, forced McCutchen to exit the Pirates' contest on Aug. 3.

McCutchen is hitting .311 with 17 homers, 67 RBI and 17 steals so far this season for Pittsburgh, which trails Milwaukee by 2 1/2 games for first place in the NL Central, but currently holds the second NL wild-card spot.

To take McCutchen's spot on the active roster, the club recalled pitcher Casey Sadler from Triple-A Indianapolis.
