Phelps edged in 200 fly, but ties medal record

Michael Phelps was out-touched at the wall by South Africa's Chad le Clos, settling for a silver in the 200-meter fly on Tuesday night, but still matched the all-time Olympic medal record.

Swimming in what he swears will be his last Olympics, Phelps now has 18 medals to tie Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won 18 in the 1950s and 60s.

Phelps could set the record in a matter of minutes. He was swimming in the 800-meter freestyle relay final with Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens later Tuesday night.

The U.S. has won the relay in the past two Olympics, and in 10 of the last 13.

Le Clos surged in his last stroke to edge Phelps by .05 seconds. Takeshi Matsuda won bronze and Tyler Clary, the American teammate who was critical of Phelps' training in a newspaper article, finished fifth.
