Panthers QB Cam Newton ready for first game action since underdoing ankle surgery in March

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

Cam Newton will see his first game action since undergoing ankle surgery in March when the Panthers host the Kansas City Chiefs.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he expects Newton to play at least a quarter on Sunday night, but he could see additional action depending on how well the offensive line protects him. It may also depend on whether Newton can control his competitive urges to take off and run from the pocket.

The Panthers are trying to avoid a setback by Newton before the regular season opener against Tampa Bay.

Newton says "each day it's been getting better and better for me. At this point we don't want to have any mishaps in the treatment process."
