Padres put pitcher Ross on disabled list with shoulder woe

DENVER (AP) The San Diego Padres have put opening day pitcher Tyson Ross on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

The Padres announced the move Saturday, retroactive to Tuesday.

Right-handed reliever Brad Hand, claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins earlier this week, reported to the Padres to fill the roster spot.

Ross took the loss on opening day against the Dodgers, giving up seven earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Righty James Shields, moving up a spot in the rotation but pitching on his normal rest, will start Sunday's series finale against the Rockies. He'll be followed by Andrew Cashner on Monday at Philadelphia.

Lefty Robbie Erlin, who picked up the win Friday against Colorado with 3 2-3 innings of one-hit relief, will move from the bullpen to make a spot start Tuesday.

''That's part of the reason he came out the game (Friday),'' manager Andy Green said. ''He's got enough time to recover and make his next start.''
