Out of playoffs for 5th straight year, Wizards' Grunfeld repeats familiar refrain of hope

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Team President Ernie Grunfeld says the Washington Wizards have a solid foundation of young players and veterans, and the goal is to make the playoffs next season.

If that sounds familiar, it's because it's been the running theme of Grunfeld's end-of-season news conferences for several years now.

The Wizards are a lottery team for the fifth consecutive year, although injuries played a greater role than usual this time. Grunfeld said Tuesday that "the No. 1 thing" for the Wizards is to get the roster healthy for next season.

Grunfeld says he still wants John Wall around for the long term, which means talking to the point guard about a contract extension once free agency begins July 1. Wall says he played well enough to deserve a max-value deal.
