Orioles OF David Lough designated for assignment

BALTIMORE (AP) Outfielder David Lough has been designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles, who needed the roster spot for a backup catcher.

Lough is batting .202 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 76 games.

The move Friday coincides with the recall of catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk.

Because starter Matt Wieters is day to day with a tender right hamstring, manager Buck Showalter said, ''We had to have a catcher.''

The Orioles have 10 days to trade or release Lough before placing him on waivers.

Showalter said Lough ''is in a good spot'' because he will either latch on with another team or can stay in the organization in Norfolk. If that happens, Lough can return to Baltimore in September.
