The Sunday statement says Gonzalez Lopez became an IOC member in 1995.

He had a long career as a sporting executive, including as secretary general of the Cuban National Olympic Committee and executive secretary of the Pan American Sports Organization.

He was also president of Cuba's National Sports Institute from 1994 to 1997.
