Oklahoma State basketball legend Bob Kurland, 88, dies at home in south Florida

Former Oklahoma State basketball All-American Bob Kurland has died at his home in south Florida.

School spokesman Mike Noteware said Monday that Kurland died in his sleep Sunday following a lengthy illness. He was 88.

Kurland was a 7-footer who led what was then Oklahoma A&M to national championships in 1945 and 1946, and was a member of the 1948 and 1952 U.S. gold medal-winning Olympic teams.

He was elected to both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Kurland did not play professionally, working instead for Phillips Petroleum and playing with the company's Amateur Athletic Union team.

He's survived by his wife, Barbara, four children and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were pending.
