English Premier League side Norwich City named Chris Hughton its new manager Thursday.

The 53-year-old Hughton left Championship side Birmingham City to join Norwich as he returns to the Premiership on a three-year contract. The former Ireland international managed Newcastle in 2009-10, and was an assistant for Tottenham from 1998-2008.

"This is something that I've been very excited about," Hughton said. "It has been done very speedily, which I've been delighted with, and I'm looking forward to the challenge in front of me."

Hughton replaces Paul Lambert, who left Norwich to join Aston Villa. Norwich finished 12th in the league last season.

"It's about making progress and with every new manager and player comes a new challenge," Hughton said.
